How to ensure your house is feng shui-compliant

PART and parcel of starting a new year on the right footing is getting your house ready. And by that we mean beyond the customary spring cleaning. Malaysian Institute of Geomancy Sciences president Prof Joe Choo says there are many benefits to prepping a house that follows the principles of feng shui.

“A house that is feng shui-compliant helps to cultivate positive things such as good health and wealth, and a strong bond within the family. A house that goes against feng shui principles may cause sickness, monetary loss, arguments that lead to fights, even divorce,” says Prof Choo.

To usher in the Year of the Dog in 2018, there are a few things that people can do to help pave a smooth year ahead.

“Ensure that there aren’t any living plants, aquarium or water feature, crystals or stove in the north-west or the north sectors,” she shares, explaining that north-west (292.5 to 307.5 degrees) is the Governing Planet (Thai Sui) sector while north (352.5 to 7.5 degrees) is the Three Killers (San Sha).

“It is not good to activate these two sectors to avoid negative events such as falling sick regularly, having your house broken into, or arguments within the family,” she advises.

To give you a headstart, here are three tips from the author and feng shui consultant:

Orientation

In feng shui, the eight Gua numbers are divided into the Eastern and Western groups. Gua 1, 3, 4 and 9 fall under the Eastern group while Gua 2, 5, 7 and 8 fall under the Western group.

The good sectors for the Eastern group are north, east, south-east and south. For the Western group, the good sectors are north-east, south-west, west and north-west. It is therefore important for you to know your Gua number in order to get a house with the right orientation.

To calculate your Gua number, take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add them together. Reduce the number to a single digit. For example if you were born in 1957, take the 57; 5+7=12; 1+2=3.

For men, subtract the single digit from 10. Example: 1957; single number is 3; 10- 3=7. The Gua number is 7. As for women, add 5 to the single digit. Example: 1957; single number is 3; 3+5=8. The Gua number is 8.

If you were born in January or the beginning of February (before the 5th), you should add 1 year to your year of birth. For example, if you were born in January 1971, it’s like you were born in 1972.

Elements

Living plants produce living energy, which helps to enhance good things such as wealth, health and luck.

It is advisable to place them at good corners and locations. If placed wrongly, it can result in sickness, monetary loss and other misfortunes.

To ensure the living plants are placed correctly, first you must find out your Gua number and then the grouping of your Gua.

For example, if your Gua number is 9 which is the Eastern group, you may place living plants at the north, east, south-east and south sectors of your house.

Colours

Red, green and blue are considered auspicious colours for 2018.

But for those born in the "summer" (lunar months 5, 6 and 7), it is not advisable for them to use red, but you can choose green and blue.

For those born in "winter" (lunar months 11, 12 and 1) it is good to use red and green.
