College Life in One Day

Engineering the future

See what college students are up to by tuning into an online series.

WHAT goes on behind college walls? Well, to get a sneak peek into the lives of Taylor’s University College students, check out the College Life In One Day (CLIOD) series.

Those who have been following the series would have watched the far-from-mundane daily routine of a bunch of students.

This week, CLIOD brings you into the School of Engineering, where second-year students Low May Ann, Aaron Tang and their classmates plan a class project: to build a buggy.

“The ‘problem’ given to us (for the project) was that we wanted a car but our parents didn’t agree, so we decided to build one,” says May Ann, 19.

Instead of mere chalk and talk, the course involves a lot of hands-on work and students are tasked with various projects, which include researching, designing and building machines and showcasing their work during the college’s Engineering Fair.

“During the last fair, there were a solar cooker, car, wind panels, and lots more showcased. Previously, my friend made a jacket with a built-in fan, and someone made a pair of high heels that can be changed to flats,” May Ann shares.

Having a video production crew following them for a day was quite an experience for these future engineers.

“It was my first time and it was quite fun. We were nervous and didn’t know how to act. We laughed a lot but the director was assuring,” says Aaron, 19, who has devised the mechanical parts for a clothes hanger that retracts when it rains.

Here’s an opportunity for you to win a scholarship from Taylor’s University College!

Submit a video of you and/or your friend that is fun, funny and educational. For example, show us how to make a nutritious breakfast in five minutes, or how to eat without smearing your lipstick.

Give it a creative title (in a maximum of five words) and upload it to YouTube.com.

The CLIOD contest is open to Malaysian students aged 16 to 18. You can join as an individual contestant or as a group of up to four participants.

The grand prize winner of the first category stands a chance to secure a scholarship worth RM10,000 to RM15,000, while grand prize winners for the second category will win a scholarship of up to RM40,000 for the whole group. All first prize winners will receive a Nokia phone each.
